Dating back centuries, it's one of Siena's most important traditions and thousands of locals and tourists gather in the central piazza to watch it unfold. The first of this year's races — known as the Palio of Provenzano in honour of the Madonna of Provenzano, an icon kept in a local church — takes place on the evening of July 2nd. There's a second on August 16th, as well as a series of trial runs in the days leading up to each race. Children cheer their local district. For the Siennese, the contest is a chance to celebrate local pride and honour the city's long history. A collision in July
The nobles brought their best horses and devoted their victories to the saints. The prize that was given to the winner was a pallium , that is, a precious piece of cloth that gave the name to the event. It was during the Renaissance that the Contrade appeared , and the nobles began to delegate the race to their colored jockeys whose nicknames have been handed down to this day. Today, the Palio is regularly held twice a year, on July 2 and August 16 , and only 10 districts take part in every race: the 7 who did not participate in the previous competition and 3 which are drawn among those who participated. On August 16th, the actual race begins around 19 , but the historic procession winds in the afternoon for the streets of the center with knights and figures dressed in the traditional clothes of their Contrada.
Ten horses and riders, bareback and dressed in the appropriate colours, represent ten of the seventeen contrade , or city wards. The Palio held on 2 July is named Palio di Provenzano, in honour of the Madonna of Provenzano , a Marian devotion particular to Siena which developed around an icon from the Terzo Camollia. Sometimes, in case of exceptional events or local or national anniversaries deemed relevant and pertinent ones, the city community may decide for an extraordinary Palio, run between May and September. The last two were on 9th September , to celebrate the entering of the city in the new millennium and on 20th October , in commemoration of the end of the Great War. A pageant , the Corteo Storico , precedes the race, which attracts visitors and spectators from around the world. The race itself, in which the jockeys ride bareback, circles the Piazza del Campo , on which a thick layer of earth has been laid. The race is run for three laps of the piazza and usually lasts no more than 90 seconds.
