Established in , UNODC has over 1, staff working at the national, regional and global levels through a network of 54 field and project offices, as well as liaison offices in New York and Brussels. UNODC works to inform the world about the dangers of drug abuse and to strengthen international action against drug production, trafficking and drug-related crime. UNODC also works to improve crime prevention and to assist with criminal justice reform in a number of countries. UNODC works with Member States to strengthen the rule of law, promote stable and viable criminal justice systems and combat the growing threats of transnational organized crime and corruption. UNODC bases its work on the three pillars of research and analytical work, normative work to assist States in the ratification and implementation of international treaties, and the development of domestic legislation on drugs, crime and terrorism, and field-based technical cooperation projects. In the area of violence prevention and response, UNODC works together with other United Nations entities to provide the evidence needed to design effective violence prevention and reduction initiatives. UNODC recognizes, in particular, the value multi-sectoral cooperation and an evidence-based approach to targeting the risk factors that lead to violence.

The agency, employing between 1, and 2, people worldwide, has its headquarters in Vienna Austria , with 21 field offices and two liaison offices in Brussels and in New York City. Yuri Fedotov , the former Russian Ambassador to the United Kingdom, has held this position since his appointment in , when he succeeded Antonio Maria Costa in his personal capacity, and also as Director-General of the United Nations Office at Vienna. UNODC was established to assist the UN in better addressing a coordinated, comprehensive response to the interrelated issues of illicit trafficking in and abuse of drugs, crime prevention and criminal justice, international terrorism, and political corruption. The office aims long-term to better equip governments to handle drug-, crime -, terrorism -, and corruption -related issues, to maximise knowledge on these issues among governmental institutions and agencies, and also to maximise awareness of said matters in public opinion, globally, nationally and at community level. The World Drug Report is a yearly publication that presents a comprehensive assessment of the international drug problem, with detailed information on the illicit drug situation. The Report, based on data and estimates collected or prepared by Governments, UNODC and other international institutions, attempts to identify trends in the evolution of global illicit drug markets. Through the World Drug Report, UNODC aims to enhance Member States' understanding of global illicit drug trends and increase their awareness of the need for the more systematic collection and reporting of data relating to illicit drugs.

One of the key tasks of UNODC is to produce and disseminate accurate drugs and crime statistics at the international level. UNODC also works to strengthen national capacity to produce, disseminate and use drugs and crime statistics within the framework of official statistics. UNODC regularly provides global statistical series on crime, criminal justice, drug trafficking and prices, drug production, and drug use. A number of statistical standard and recommendations are developed by UNODC in the field of crime, criminal justice and illicit drugs in collaboration with national experts and relevant international organizations. A number of initiatives are carried out by UNODC to support countries to strengthen their information systems on crime and drugs and to promote regional and international cooperation in the field of crime and drug statistics. From monitoring of illicit crop cultivation to corruption, crime trends and crime victimization, UNODC regularly publishes a broad range of surveys.

UNODC is a global leader in the fight against illicit drugs and international crime. In the Millennium Declaration, Member States also resolved to intensify efforts to fight transnational crime in all its dimensions, to redouble the efforts to implement the commitment to counter the world drug problem and to take concerted action against international terrorism. In pursuing its objectives, UNODC makes every effort to integrate and mainstream the gender perspective, particularly in its projects for the provision of alternative livelihoods, as well as those against human trafficking. The international community confronts a host of menaces, including illicit drugs, threats to security and health and new and emerging crimes. As Governments and other development partners increasingly look to UNODC for specialized assistance and expertise, the Office has expanded it scope and volume of work to provide comprehensive and coherent responses to these challenges.
